  • Chess Tourney - Spring Regional

    Back by popular demand! Our regional chess tourneys are fun, competitive and an all around good time. We have a growing number of players from around the region, ready to play in a community of players that love the game and friendships formed. We will award medals and ribbons to grade level and division champions. Check in begins at 8:00 am at Mankato East High School (1900 Hoffman Road in Mankato, MN) First round is at 8:30 am. We will present awards at 11:30 am. Please register in advance so we can prepare the tournament space for a good time. We do not accept walk in registrations as we need to contact contestants if weather or low enrollment influences play. This event is co-sponsored by South Central Service Coop and Mankato Community Education Enrichment + Leisure Program.

    Como Zoo + Conservatory Trip

    Join us at the Como Zoo and Conservatory for a fun and educational day! Exotic animals and gorgeous gardens await you. Participants on this trip will be roaming the Como Park property independently. If you would like to plan your route ahead of time follow this link! Lunch will be on your own at the zoo's many cafes and lunch spots for purchase throughout the park. We have budgeted 3 hours at Como Zoo, so our guests can explore exhibits and take in shows at a leisurely pace. Registration Deadline is May 31! Arrive at Wow Zone parking lot in Mankato around 8:15 to leave at 8:30 am, or arrive atat the parking lot of St. Peter Community Center in St. Peter by 8:45 am, stop at Holiday station in Shakopee for restroom break, leave Zoo around 1:30, end of day return to Mankato around 4 pm.     Students will learn how to fly like the pros in the Drone Racing League by training on a flight simulator. After learning drone safety and maintenance, students will take a drone to the skies and compete in numerous races and challenges. Led by experienced instructors, students will leave camp with the skills and knowledge to pilot drones and keep them running. The drones used in camps have cameras, and are perfect for entry level pilots. No prior experience needed! This camp has two cost options: $110 - Instruction and a drone to use while in camp $170 - Instruction and you can bring home your drone to own after camp is complete This camp is presented by COR Robotics. You WILL NOT be able to go to your locker after 3:30 pm when the academic wings are locked There will be a sign indicating the check in area and MSAS site supervisors will be ready to distribute a snack and take attendance. From 3:25 - 3:45 pm, students will be in the cafeteria having a snack, visiting with friends, and unwinding from the school day. Site Supervisors will have organized games or art supplies available for student use. Youth can also use this time to complete homework. This is also time when students can locate their teachers for questions or to make up work. Check in with MSAS Site Supervisors before locating your classroom teacher. TRANSPORTATION HOME Clubs begin at 3:45 pm and end at 5:00 pm. Transportation is not available. Parents / Guardians must arrange for pick up at 5:00 pm. All youth participating in the Middle School After School Student Union or Clubs should report to the cafeteria immediately after the final bell of the day for a snack and check in with staff. Site Supervisors will assure students are directed to the right location for their club or have proper supervision and age appropriate activity until picked up. SAFETY & CONDUCT We ask that any student enrolled in Middle School After School be prepared to follow school day rules for conduct as well as any COVID mitigation guidelines including but not limited to: staying home when you are ill and following CDC guidelines when you test positive for COVID.     DUNGEONS & DRAGONS CLUB ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL AFTER SCHOOL Middle School After School Clubs meet after school (when classes are in session). Most clubs meet one day per week. There are exceptions such as parent teacher conferences or days when after school programming is cancelled due to weather other unforeseen circumstances. When changes are made to the original schedule, the Mankato CER office will communicate with parents via text or email, so please be certain that your payer account stays updated with accurate email and phone contact information. HOW MANY DAYS PER WEEK CAN I ATTEND MSAS? During the 2023-24 school year, Middle School After School will be open at Prairie Winds and Dakota Meadows Middle Schools from 3:25 - 5:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday afternoons. No programming on Wednesday or Friday. You should attend MSAS on the day(s) your club(s) are in session. You may also attend MSAS on the day(s) you are not enrolled in a club but want to stay after school to wait for a ride. We call this time (outside of your club time) "Student Union." During Student Union you can work on homework, use games activities provided by the program, and hang out with friends.
