Everybody Has A Story: Starting Your Memoir

Minnesota State Arts Board -
Summer 2024

Many people have experiences that they'd like to share in writing with friends, family, or the public, but they don't know how to begin. In this course, we'll read short excerpts from classic memoirs and do writing exercises in order to help students isolate what stories they want to tell and how they want to tell them. We'll examine ways of organizing memories into a narrative, practice adding lively details, consider whether there are themes that should be highlighted, and noodle around with how to tell the whole truth when you don't know it. Students will end the course with writing that can be shared and with skills to continue writing and sharing. Whether you want to write about life on the old homestead, once-in-a-lifetime travel, military service, youthful hijinks, an admired relative, or a period of loss, this course can help you get started.
